In the News
And now, for something completely different!
I'm sitting at the A's-Yankees game in the best seats I've ever had. Derek Jeter strolls into the on-deck circle. So I do what any self-respecting Bay Area geek would do - I whip out my iPhone to snap some photos and post them. I go to add a caption, and bam! The iPhone lends a helping hand. Priceless.
Additional nerd commentary
I do want to add a little geek sub-text to this story. I'd heard rumors that the iPhone keyboard's auto-correction was getting progressively more sophisticated under the hood, but I'd never bothered to verify this myself. Now I do at least have an example of how sophisticated it has become. (And its limitations, obviously.) Apparently, the underlying logic takes into account the angle at which you hit a letter, and the part of the letter you type. Tap on the H side of the J, and this little Jeter joke is more likely to occur than if you tap closer to the K. Try it out for yourself! In this respect, the virtual keyboard can correct for typos more intelligently than a physical keyboard can. Of course, some might say that's just a partial compensation for all the typing difficulties the virtual keyboard causes in the first place...
